The Waste Hierarchy

The UK is the fourth largest producer of textile waste in Europe.

Around 1.8m tonnes of clothing and textile waste is generated in the UK each year, of which 1.2m tonnes (almost 70%) ends up in landfill.

At Mathias, we are passionate about reducing our impact on the environment, and we use the waste hierarchy as our set of guiding principles to prioritise our endeavours and support our customers with their waste reduction targets.

Prevention

Our project to eliminate single use plastic is a fantastic example of waste prevention. Whilst many other suppliers are focussing on alternative methods of packaging, we have been working to completely eliminate all packaging waste, and were the first company in the UK to provide a zero single-use plastic solution for our customers, and the first company in the UK to import workwear without single-use plastic packaging, working in collaboration with our major customers to eliminate the single use plastic problem.

Our workwear and PPE ordering portal, MUMS, is also specifically designed to stop waste from being created in the first place, and ensure that the product lifecycle is maximized. MUMS was created with a specific objective in mind - to effective manage and control workwear and PPE cost and compliance for large customers with multiple delivery sites and job roles.

We have a range of solutions to enable the re-use of products, as well as recycling solutions to turn workwear and PPE waste into new products.
